The need of cities worldwide to adapt to Nature-based Solutions aim to conserve or restore nature, supporting gray infrastructure to reduce disaster risk, improve community and environmental wellbeing. Harmonizing green and grey infrastructure allows for an alternate pathway towards sustainability, which grey infrastructure systems cannot achieve on its own.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
The aim of this session is to look at different risks to which cities and their critical infrastructures are exposed to, and guide exchange along different measures e.g. nature based solutions for reducing public and private infrastructures\u2019 vulnerability. By showcasing the different scales and approaches to nature-based solutions for sustainable infrastructure, the session will provide a forum for increased agenda coordination for sustainable development as well as resource efficiency in the implementation of development & cooperation measures.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Cities have become the centers of human activity and thus there is a confluence of risk at the urban level. Risks are created by our development decisions, by sectors, and how these risks are no longer a standalone matter but are increasingly interconnected and more and more systemic (effects feeding into another and adding into that other and so on).<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Consequential, the economic losses are mounting as we are not able to address risk, requiring thus investments in three dimensions, not only the built environment, but also the social, economic, and environmental. Risk informed development <\/strong>is so relevant, as well as ensuring this practice populates the urban scale, meaning that it ensures a systems\u2019 thinking and bring actors and stakeholders together.
\n
\nThis Insight Moment will be delivered by none other than the master of the field Mr. Rajeev Issar (UNDP)<\/strong>, who has over ten years\u2019 experience as a resilience, sustainable development and risk management professional, currently working with UNDP on risk-informed sustainable development processes, global policy discourse on 2030 Agenda, urban resilience, disaster\/climate risk analysis and impact assessments from different time thresholds. MCR2030's programmatic approach is built around a three-stage \"resilience roadmap<\/strong>\" that guides cities on how to improve resilience over time. Cities make commitments to demonstrate progress along the resilience roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Flood risks are already high and increasing across many urban regions across the world as a result of rapid urbanization and climate change, manifesting in adverse direct and cascading impacts on people, infrastructure, economy, and the environment. This raises the question how to tackle the growing risks of climate change, including how to adapt to climate-induced extreme weather events and how to ensure climate-resilient development.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
This Insight Session on \u201dBuilding Climate Resilience: Lessons from Flood-Prone Urban Regions in Central Viet Nam and the 2021 Floods in Western Europe\u201d will reflect on global mega-trends affecting flood risks in urban regions, and share experiences from flood prone-urban regions in Central Viet Nam and recent catastrophic floods in Western Europe for understanding and managing flood risks and impacts both in the short- and long-term.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Developed by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), this scorecard empowers local governments to assess and enhance their city's resilience, aligning with the Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient. Not only does it help monitor progress and challenges in implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, but it also lays the foundation for crafting robust disaster risk reduction and resilience strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
The scorecard offers two distinct levels of assessment. Level 1, a rapid yet comprehensive evaluation, invites city stakeholders to review 47 carefully crafted questions and indicators, this initial step sets the stage for meaningful dialogue and collaboration. Level 2, a deep-dive assessment, invites a multi-stakeholder journey through the exploration of 117 detailed indicator criteria. Despite growing global interest in the implementation of Sponge Cities, which aim to create resilient and liveable urban regions, their potential is not yet fully realised in many fast-growing cities in sub-Saharan Africa. The term Sponge City itself describes already the main purpose of the concept: A blue-green water management infrastructure is created alongside traditional grey drainage systems, allowing rainwater to be collected, treated, stored and later released as an additional urban water resource.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

This session will explore the technical challenges of integrating climate data science into urban planning and management, focusing on how limited access to reliable data impedes effective decision-making. The complex task of embedding climate considerations into existing urban frameworks, addressing the infrastructural and policy gaps that hinder resilience will also be explored.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
The Green Climate Fund\u2019s (GCF) strategic interest in channeling resources toward resilient infrastructure will be discussed, by highlighting its ICRF (Infrastructure Climate Resilient Facility) Programme and the UN initiative BCRUP (Building Climate Resistance for the Urban Poor).<\/span><\/p>\n\n
