Insight Moment on the topic of Dynamic Vulnerability.

Vulnerability is a key concept within Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management and is often the first step towards the planning of any disaster mitigating or climate adaptation measures. Vulnerability is a function of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity, all three components which differ across space and time.The global climate system will continue to change unpredictably in the future due to greenhouse gas emissions from past and future. The impact of Climate-induced hazards such as heat waves, floods and, extreme rainfall, on ecosystems, human health and economy will become more severe in the coming decades.

Therefore, to plan for our future accordingly, it is important to fully understand the dynamics of vulnerability, how to quantify vulnerability and how this information can inform planning.

This Insight Moment will be delivered by the following speaker: 

Juan Camilo Gomez-Zapata finalized a degree in Geological Engineering at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in 2013. Later, he worked for 3 years sector as a consultant in the engineering industry. He then pursued a postgraduate degree in Geotechnics in 2016, and a European master's in Engineering Seismology (jointly coursed in Grenoble, France, and in Pavia, Italy) in 2018. Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Potsdam and since 2018 he works at the Division of Seismic Hazards and Risk Dynamics at the GFZ (Germany). During his career, he has also participated in several international conferences. 

His research focuses on scenario-based multi-hazard risk assessment for large cities accounting for dynamic vulnerability, multi-resolution exposure models, and their uncertainties. The outcomes of these studies are compiled in open-source datasets and software, which have been used in risk communication initiatives during the last 3 years.
