Arab cities are navigating a complex and uneven digital transformation journey, with notable successes and persistent challenges. While investments in infrastructure, strategic planning, and capacity building have advanced digitalization in some cities, others lag due to resource constraints, institutional inefficiencies, and socio-economic disparities. The report underscores the importance of integrating strategy, skills, funding, organizational change, and stakeholder collaboration. By addressing these interlinked dimensions, Arab cities can harness digital technologies to enhance governance, foster innovation, and improve the quality of life for their populations, ultimately achieving resilient and inclusive urban ecosystems.
This virtual launch event showcases the flagship report ‘MUNICIPALITIES AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN ARAB CITIES’ by the Arab Urban Development Institute with a contribution of Connective Cities. It which examines the digital transformation in Arab cities, focusing on how cities enhance resource management, improve services, and engage communities through diverse digital technologies. It emphasizes five strategic pillars essential
for sustainable digital transformation: strategy and leadership; internal processes; human resources and skills; financial resources; and stakeholder cooperation. By exploring these pillars, the report sheds light on how cities build digital urban economies, societies, and environments. Furthermore, first-hand experience from Manama municipality will be discussed with his excellency the Mayor of Manama. Similarly, insights from the implementation of the GIZ project ‘Digital municipalities in Tunisia: transparent, citizen-oriented and efficient’ will be presented.
