Insight Moment on the topic of Critical Infrastructure - Building CapaCITY

Climate change, political instability and growing resource scarceness are only a few of the factors that are increasing disaster risks worldwide. The hazards that are endangering people’s wellbeing are manyfold and occur with unprecedented intensity and frequency. At the same time, technological advances accelerate interconnectivity around the globe, which in the case of a disaster leads to even higher damages and further transmitted impacts. It is therefore necessary that cities work towards a better Disaster Risk Management and learn how to make risk-informed decisions to protect people’s livelihoods.

To ensure that measurements take the best possible effect, it is important to understand the concepts of risk, vulnerability and resilience regarding Critical Infrastructures as well as the possibilities for building capacities on a communal level.

This Insight Moment will be delivered by the following speakers:

Carlotta Bauer, Chris Hetkämper and Johanne Kaufmann are Research Associates / Research Assistants in the Working Group of Prof. Alexander Fekete at the Institute of Rescue Engineering and Civil Protection at Cologne University of Applied Sciences. They have been involved in various research projects regarding Critical Infrastructure, Civil Protection as well as Social Resilience and have worked with municipalities from various international contexts in the field of preventive Civil Protection as well as Risk and Crisis Management. Currently they are involved in the Global Initiative on Disaster Risk Management (GIDRM) implemented by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ).
