Dr Christo Marais was the former Chief Director: Natural Resource Management (NRM) Programmes of the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment. He specializes in translating NRM and economic theory into practice focusing amongst others on ecosystem based disaster management, more specifically nature based solutions to droughts, fires and floods. His most recent projects focused on mainstreaming biodiversity stewardship in South Africa, strategic planning for large scale restoration Programmes and the mentoring of African cities on the contribution of nature based solutions to flood mitigation.
For the insight session, Dr. Marais shares the lessons learnt and his observations in mentoring cities from the Learning and exchange process, in developing bankable project proposals.
