Gender-sensitive urban planning and development
Urban planning and development are never gender-neutral. One's own everyday experiences determine - often unconsciously - the way urban practitioners plan and develop a city. Especially in regions where urban planning and development are male-dominated and the needs of a stereotypical working man still set the standard, the everyday patterns of more than half the population are often excluded from consideration. Yet different users - women and men, girls, and boys - use and experience the city differently.
Urban planning and development that seeks to adequately address gender issues must incorporate gender into all urban development policies and programs, whether zoning, public space design, street lighting, housing, etc.
The working group Gender-sensitive urban planning and development discusses existing approaches and best practices for gender-sensitive urban planning and development. Further, the members of the working group exchange expertise and develop new approaches of gender-sensitive planning for their own cities.
